Rachel Owens, a mother of seven and grandmother of three, was recently crowned Mrs. Georgia USA after accepting the challenge to compete a few months back. Owens was encouraged by some friends to compete and wanted to challenge herself after being a pageant mom to her daughter Madison for years.
A New Respect for Pageants
Owens quickly learned that knowing about the pageant world and competing in it are two different things. She gained a newfound respect for her daughter’s hard work and the pageant world in general. Owens explained that it was nerve-wracking, but throughout the competition, she made lifelong friendships and gained a new appreciation for how everyone is beautiful in their own way.
Mrs. Georgia USA Competition
Unlike Miss competitions, contestants in the Mrs. Georgia USA competition must be married and between the ages of 18-50. They are not required to have a talent but compete in evening gowns, interviews, and sportswear competitions. Owens said the contestants varied in their pursuits, from doctors to stay-at-home moms to businesswomen, but all shared a common goal in the pursuit of excellence.
New Opportunities and Challenges
As Mrs. Georgia USA, Owens will be traveling across the state representing Georgia before heading to Nationals in Omaha in July. She will be meeting with the Governor and his wife in April and will have the opportunity to travel to Puerto Rico in May to do a photoshoot with other Mrs. winners. Owens will also be available locally to represent the community that has backed her throughout her journey.
Preparing for Nationals
While Owens is excited about her new opportunities, she knows she needs to be prepared for the upcoming Nationals in Omaha. She will be on a rigorous training schedule with her new trainer, Wes Gandy from Alabama. Gandy will help Owens get into the best fitness shape of her life and work on her walk, as Nationals will be a much larger stage than what she has experienced before.
Beyond Mrs. Georgia USA
In the event Owens doesn’t return from Nationals as the new Mrs. USA, she has already spoken with directors about her next adventure. This could lead to her being on the Board of Directors or becoming a pageant coach herself. Regardless of the outcome, Owens noted that this pageant will help her on her way to becoming the next Mrs. America, which is something she is participating in as well.
Overall, Rachel Owens’ journey from pageant mom to Mrs. Georgia USA is one of determination, hard work, and a newfound respect for the pageant world. Her opportunities and challenges ahead are numerous, but Owens is ready to take on anything that comes her way.
