Kentucky to Embark on Second Straight Summer Foreign Trip
Kentucky Basketball Set to Represent United States: For the second year in a row, the Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball team is set to embark on a foreign trip, according to head coach John Calipari. Last summer, the team played four games in the Bahamas, but this time around, they will represent the United States at the second annual Global Jam in Toronto in July.
The news was alluded to by Calipari during his final weekly radio show, where he mentioned receiving a call about the possibility of playing in an event in July. “That news will be coming out shortly if that’s the way this goes, which I believe it will,” he said. “So, we have some summer to play against some really good competition to figure out where we are and it’s a good start for us.”
The upcoming trip will be critical for the young Wildcats roster, which just finished its 2022-23 season with a loss to Kansas State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The team is expected to add the nation’s top-ranked recruiting class, featuring four top-10 prospects and projected first-round picks in Justin Edwards, DJ Wagner, Aaron Bradshaw, and Robert Dillingham. The class also includes Kentucky legacy, McDonald’s All-American, and Kentucky Mr. Basketball Reed Sheppard.
Wildcats Confident in Young Roster and Top-Ranked Recruiting Class
Heading into the trip, the Wildcat’s coaching staff is confident in their young group of players and those who will be returning. “We’re going to be playing against grown men, so that’s going to be helpful to us as we take on another journey,” said assistant coach Chin Coleman. “I feel very confident in the group we have coming in and the individuals that come back.”
The trip will also provide an opportunity for the team to figure out their identity and improve their game against top-notch competition. In the Bahamas last summer, the Wildcats dominated their opponents, averaging 106.5 points and winning by an average of 50 points per game. However, this upcoming trip will present a different challenge, with the team going up against experienced and talented players from around the world.
“I feel good about the group we have coming in, the 5-star players, the group I would envision coming back and going from there and saying, ‘Let’s go do this,'” Calipari said. “The best teams I’ve had here were a combination of young kids and veterans. This team, in my mind, should have both.”
In the coming weeks, the team will also be dealing with stay-or-go decisions from most of their current roster, which will have a significant impact on the team’s makeup and strategy for the upcoming trip. Nevertheless, with their talented recruiting class and confident coaching staff, the Wildcats are ready to take on the world and showcase their skills at the Global Jam in Toronto.
