Trump’s Arraignment on Criminal Charges and the Courtroom Proceedings
Former President Donald J. Trump is set to be arraigned on criminal charges in a Manhattan courtroom on Tuesday, but the full proceedings will not be available for broadcast or photography. According to Juan M. Merchan, an acting New York Supreme Court justice, video and radio journalists will not be allowed inside the courtroom during the arraignment.
News Organizations Request Exception for Cameras and Electronic Devices
News organizations had requested an exception to allow for a limited number of videographers, photographers, and radio journalists to be present, but Judge Merchan denied the request. Trump’s lawyers had argued that cameras would create a “circus-like atmosphere” and raise security concerns that could potentially lead to prejudice.
However, five still photographers will be allowed in the courtroom before the proceedings begin and will be given “several minutes” to take photos before being escorted out. Once the photographers leave, “no further photography will be permitted.” Cameras will be allowed in the hallways to potentially capture Mr. Trump walking into the courtroom.
Camera and Electronic Device Restrictions for Trump’s Criminal Charges Arraignment
In addition to the restrictions on cameras, electronic devices will also not be permitted in the courtroom. News organizations had requested that journalists attending the arraignment be allowed to use their electronic devices to email, text, and post to social networks during the proceedings, but Judge Merchan ruled that any devices in the courtroom must be turned off and put away. Any device in public view would be confiscated.
Trump’s arraignment marks the first time he will be facing criminal charges since leaving office. The charges are related to alleged tax fraud and other financial crimes. The former president has denied any wrongdoing and called the charges politically motivated.
Judge’s Ruling: Limited Photography and No Electronic Devices Allowed
The judge’s ruling ensures that the arraignment will be conducted without the distraction of cameras or electronic devices. The proceedings will be closely watched by the public and could have significant implications for Trump’s future legal battles.
